Being a parent has its up and downs. We all know this to be true. Last night I experienced an up and I wanted to share. Craft Girl had been invited to a birthday party on a Monday morning (Martin Luther King Day). The kids don’t have school but most parents still have to work. Ashley and I are no exception. I have work that day and she has dance practice. Craft Girl asked me on Monday night if she could attend the party. She explained that it was going to be a pajama party and they were going to have pancakes, eggs, and all the usual breakfast items. I told her that I would have to think about it since we still had to work. She said OK and said nothing more about it.
Fast forward 3 days. I am standing in the kitchen next to Ashley. I lean over and whispered that, based on Craft Girl’s actions, I had decided to let her attend the birthday party. I called Craft Girl over and told her the news. I explained that she was being allowed to attend the party for the following reasons:
- She had not persistently asked me about it.
- Her attitude was awesome all week.
- She did everything she was told to without complaint.
- She never complained about what was for supper.
- She has not gotten in any trouble all week.
She looked up at me with a smile and then gave me a huge hug. She then walked over to Ashley who was also complimenting her on her actions this week and gave her a huge long hug as well. She then said “I think I am going to go upstairs and get my pj’s on and go to bed”. With that she was off.
Ashley and I just looked at each other and smiled. Its moments like this that make everything worth it. A simple warm hug and smile was the best “thank you” she could have ever given us.
